Focused on risk-informed decision making, systems engineering, and infrastructure systems optimization.
Leveraging cutting-edge methods to design and build sustainable infrastructure
The Infrastructure Systems research area is dedicated to advancing the understanding, design, and management of the critical infrastructure networks that support modern society. This multidisciplinary domain integrates expertise from geotechnical and structural engineering, transportation systems, and broader civil infrastructure fields to address complex and evolving challenges.
Researchers in this area explore the fundamental behavior of advanced materials and geotechnical systems, evaluate the performance and durability of structures, and pioneer smart sensing and monitoring technologies to enhance infrastructure management. A central focus is placed on ensuring resilience in the face of climate change and extreme events, while also embracing innovative technologies to promote sustainable development in the built environment.
Through a comprehensive and collaborative approach, the Infrastructure Systems group develops transformative solutions that improve the safety, reliability, and long-term sustainability of infrastructure — from transportation corridors and vital bridges to underground utilities and urban networks. Faculty and students are deeply engaged in cutting-edge research that informs both engineering practice and public policy, cultivating the next generation of infrastructure engineers and visionary leaders.
- Active research areas include:
- Air traffic management
