Create a short video that conveys the excitement, promise, and purpose of the civil and environmental engineering field, in a way that appeals to high school or college-age students. Your video should be produced with one or more social media platforms in mind (YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok).

PRIZES
Winners will receive prizes in the form of credits applied to their Terrapin Express accounts. There will be two categories of prizes. 

 Category A (YouTube, Facebook, or Twitter; 1-3 minutes in length)

Honorable Mention: $50
Third place: $150
Second place: $300  
Grand prize: $500 

Category B (Instagram or TikTok: 15-60 seconds)

Honorable Mention: $25
Third place: $50  
Second place: $100  
Grand prize: $200  

All award winners will be invited to a group lunch with Dr. Alba Torrents, interim department chair.

You may submit multiple entries for consideration. The department reserves the right not to award prizes in any or all categories.

GUIDELINES

1. Title

Each video should begin with a title screen (duration between 2 and 5 seconds), formatted as follows:

Producer’s name (if a team, list all team members)
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
A. James Clark School of Engineering
Track

Date

2. Length

As noted above, there are two video categories in this contest. In category A, the length can range from a minimum of 1 minute to a maximum of  3 minutes. In category B, length can range from 15 seconds to a maximum of 60 seconds.

3. Theme

Entries should address one of the following themes:

“A day in the life of a civil and environmental engineering student”
“Why I chose civil and environmental engineering”
“Civil and environmental engineers will…(complete the sentence in your video)”

4. Submission

All videos should be uploaded to Google Drive and shared with ceevideocontest@gmail.com. Indicate the intended social media platform. 

5. Judging

Student entries will be judged by a panel consisting of CEE department faculty and staff, as well as members of the Clark School communications team.

Criteria will include: storytelling quality, creative use of resources, viewer impact, relevance to theme chosen, and production quality. Note that production can be informal and non-professional in nature, but even an informal style should be done well (i.e. properly balance your audio, create visual appeal, avoid “um” and “uh” in dialogue,” etc.)

6. Releases

All individuals featured in your video must sign a release (form available for download here). In the case of minors, parents must sign the release form. Please scan your form and send to rherschb@umd.edu

All videos remain the property of the video producers. However, producers grant the A. James Clark School of Engineering permission to use their work in any of the Clark School’s communications products, including social media platforms, websites, magazines, brochures and marketing collateral. We reserve the right to edit videos as needed for use on our platforms.

7. No copyrighted material (music, images, etc.) may be used without permission or appropriate licensing. For any information or data obtained from outside sources, credit must be provided.

8. Winners are responsible for any applicable taxes.
