Introduction

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) offers a combined B.S./M-Eng. program that will allow students to earn both a B.S. in Civil Engineering and a Professional Master of Engineering degree in Artificial Intelligence or Project Management in an accelerated time frame. This accelerated program enables undergraduate students to begin their graduate experience early, and thereby receive both a more challenging education and the rewards of advanced learning activities.
B.S./M.S. vs. B.S./M.Eng.CEE also offers a BS/MS program.  When deciding whether to pursue the B.S./M.S. or the B.S./M.Eng., consider the following:

The M.S. Program:

  • is administered by the Civil Engineering Department,
  • is applied through the UMD Graduate School, whose requirements applicants must meet;
  • requires research and a thesis;
  • is on-campus only; and
  • is designed to prepare students for Ph.D. studies or a career in academia, industry or government.

The M.Eng. Program:

  • is administered by and applied to via the Maryland Applied Graduate Engineering (MAGE) office whose requirements must be met;
  • is designed with the working engineer in mind;
  • does not require or include research and a thesis;
  • does not require applicants to take the GRE;
  • may be completed on-campus, online, or a combination of both; and
  • is designed to help students advance their careers, broaden or refresh their skills, and meet the current needs of industry and government.

BENEFITS of B.S./M.Eng.Accelerated progress toward a graduate degree

  • Begin graduate coursework as an undergraduate by taking up to 3 graduate courses for use in both curricula
  • Develop advanced technical and professional skills
  • Continue directly into a coursework-based engineering master’s program
  • MAGE admits in fall, spring, and summer allowing for a seamless transition and quicker path to M.Eng. degree completion

Requirements

The B.S./M.Eng. opportunity is available to students who are currently enrolled in the CEE department. Students will complete all of the normal requirements for both the B.S. and M.Eng. degrees, but in a reduced time period because three 600-level (or above) courses will count towards the requirements for both degrees. The minimum requirements for acceptance into this combined program are:

  • At least a 3.50 GPA at the time of admission.
  • 90 or more degree credits.

Participating in the B.S./M-Eng. program does not obligate you to apply to the Master of Engineering program and complete all of the requirements for the Master’s of Engineering degree. There is no penalty for deciding not to continue into the Master’s program. In that case their double-counting courses will revert to counting for undergraduate credit only.

BS / M.Eng. in Engineering Artificial Intelligence

Up to 9 credits from the ENAI core course list.

  • ENAI600, ENAI601, ENAI602, ENAI603, ENAI604, ENAI605, ENAI606, ENAI607, and ENPM703

BS / M.Eng. in Project Management

Up to 9 credits from the Project Management core list.

  • ENCE627, ENCE661, ENCE662, ENCE664, and ENCE665
    • Due to changes in course offerings, students can consider the following as core substitutions for two core courses listed above:
      • ENCE607 - Mastering Agile Project Management instead of the current core course, ENCE665 - Management of Project Teams
      • ENCE602 - Project Procurement Management instead of the current core course, ENCE661 - Project Cost Accounting and Finance
      • Please note, if the student is interested in taking any core substitution course, please reach out to mage-advising@umd.edu to first discuss

Timeline and Application Process

**Please note that completing the B.S./M.Eng. program in full requires two separate application processes. The first is an application for the department, in order to be considered for the B.S./M.Eng. program while still an undergraduate. The second application is the official graduate school application. Students in the B.S./M.Eng. program must apply and be accepted to the MAGE program under The Graduate School requirements (https://mage.umd.edu/application-process).  Acceptance into the B.S./M-Eng. program does not guarantee your admission to The Graduate School. Sophomore YearStart thinking if this program might be for you - planning early will ensure that you’re able to keep your GPA high and complete the course requirements.Junior YearApply to the B.S./M.Eng. program. Work with your academic advisor on selecting and requesting permission to take graduate courses. Senior yearTake up to three 600-level (or above) courses to be counted for graduate and undergraduate credit. Apply to the Graduate SchoolGraduate with a B.S. in Civil Engineering!Important: Completing the M.Eng. degree in one year as a graduate student is not guaranteed. The B.S./M.Eng. program simply makes the process easier, as the student has already completed some of the credit requirements.
