Fu Publishes Computational Analysis and Design of Bridge Structures 

Computational Analysis and Design of Bridge StructuresDepartment of Civil and Environmental Engineering Research Professor Chung Fu’s 600-page Computational Analysis and Design of Bridge Structures book was published by CRC Press, Taylor & Frances Group, this past December. Fu co-authored the book along with Shuqing Wang, research fellow and bridge consultant at the University of Maryland Bridge Engineering Software and Technology (BEST) Center.

The book addresses methods for the computational analysis and design of bridges and explores special topics such as strut-and-tie modeling, linear and nonlinear buckling analysis, redundancy analysis, internal bridges, dynamic/earthquake analysis, and bridge geometry. Computational Analysis is divided into three parts and comprised of 18 chapters, including three to four illustrated examples within each chapter. Each example was drawn from bridges in the United States, China and Europe on which both authors have worked. The book covers the general aspects of bridges, bridge behavior and the modeling of bridges, and explores the physical meanings behind modeling. 

Fu spent more than two and a half years working on the book which is available for purchase across the country.

Director of the BEST Center, Fu has achieved 50 referred publications, 20 publications, more than 100 presentations and conference proceedings, and 50 public technical reports. His areas of expertise cover all types of structural engineering, bridge engineering, earthquake engineering, computer application in structures, finite element analysis, ultra-high-performance concrete, steel and composite applications – including fiber-reinforced polymer and high-performance steel for innovative bridge research and construction – and nondestructive evaluation applications.
