Multidisciplinary Study Abroad Experiences for Civil Engineers

Civil Engineering encourages study abroad experiences, whether it is for a semester or a short-term course. Studying abroad is a great, unique way to get hands-on experience and deepen your understanding of current civil engineering issues in the global environment by interacting with different students, faculty, and professionals from diverse cultures around the world.

Below are recent and planned study abroad programs specifically in Civil and Environmental Engineering, focusing on Sustainability and Smart Cities, Civil Infrastructure, and Urban Design, that Civil students have either taken or plan to attend.

These three (3) credit courses can be used as:

  • Tech Electives in the Civil Engineering Major; and double count as,
  • Tech Elective in the Sustainability Minor.

ENCE 489C Sustainability & Smart Cities:   Prague, Czech Republic

This study abroad program explores the different approaches for the development of sustainable and smart cities. The course addresses (i) the broad and complex "system" point of view of sustainability and smart cities, as well as, (ii) the system engineering, system decomposition, and design/technical aspect. The program examines smart cities' building blocks, such as "smart streets" and "smart buildings" as a matter of pragmatic and feasible details. Additionally, it explores the use of tools needed for developing real projects focusing on smart cities and sustainability, along with real case studies. The course includes several site visits related to "smart cities" components, sustainable infrastructure components, as well as cultural and engineering marvels in the city of Prague and city of Pisek. Students work alongside Czech students for learning and developing smart cities and green infrastructure projects.

When: Summer 2016, 2017 & 2018

Eligibility: all majors, undergraduate and graduate students from UMD & other US institutions.

ENCE 489G Sustainability & Infrastructure  Athens, Greece

Large cities represent only two percent of the world’s surface area, yet are the economic drivers of the world’s economy, accounting for over 80 percent of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP). As these staggering statistics suggest, the concepts and principles of “Sustainable Infrastructure” and “Smart Cities” are vital for the survival of urban settlements and the development of healthy living conditions, along with economic prosperity. This program explores the different approaches to the development of Sustainable Infrastructure including: Green Infrastructure (green buildings, green roads, and other components); Environmental Implications, Energy Systems, and Energy Conservation; Sustainability Metrics; Recycling and Waste Reduction; Mobility and Greenhouse Gas Emissions; other. The course includes several site visits related to sustainable infrastructure components, as well as cultural and engineering marvels in Athens and the surrounding areas.
