The Geotechnical Society of Edmonton has announced that Professor G. B. Baecher of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering will deliver the distinguished speaker address to its 2018 annual meeting in Edmonton, Alberta on May 24

The organization is among the oldest geotechnical associations in Canada and is affiliated with the Canadian Geotechnical Society, formed in 1959 to bring professionals and non-professionals together to share geotechnical experiences and ideas. Each month from September to May, featured speakers address the membership to discuss new developments and challenging projects in geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering. The season culminates with the Annual General Meeting, which includes a business dinner meeting, the election of a new executive, and a presentation by a distinguished speaker.

Professor Baecher received his bachelor's in civil engineering from the University of California, Berkeley and Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served as chair of CEE from 1995 to 2003 and is now a Glenn L. Martin Institute Professor of Engineering. He works on risks related to civil infrastructure, particularly in the water sector.
